Touching Lives

Sounds like a tv ad. In our line of work, it is not only through counseling that we get a personal encounter with the kids. Group dynamic activites are also important in building the pupils' inner self. But what really challenges me is when we give seminars to kids. In this day and age, everybody gets to attend a seminar. Leadrship Seminar is common to most schools, I think. In our school we give a Self-Direction Seminar especially for the Grade 6 pupils to be prepared for the next chapter of their life. It's supposed to be a reality check for them, since kids nowadays are more aware of things happening around them. One part of the seminar deals with possible problems that they may encounter in high school. It's actually difficult to make the kids understand that all the problems that they enumerated could actually happen to them e.g. failing grades due to difficult subjects, peer pressure, teenage pregnancy, vices like alcohol, smoking, drugs, gambling, problems realted to joining a fraternity/sorority (which turns out to be actully gangs). It's also a dilemma for me on how to deal with the kids - their bodies tell me that they are already dalaga's and binata's but their actions tell me that they are still kids just trying to act grown-up. The National Population Commission tells us that the average age for pregnant women in the Philippines is between 12-19. Grade 6 pupils even have a bigger chance of getting pregnant than me!
But i'm rambling.
My point is, if it's my turn to become a parent, what do i need to equip my child with so that he/she will be prepared for the 'life out there'?
